Clinical Informatics Specialist

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

This position serves as a liaison between the Hospital, Clinics, Information System team and EHR
(electronic health record) provider to communicate user needs and facilitate system modifications to meet user needs. Coordinates and leads technical planning and delivery of clinical system upgrade deployment of new technology and system upgrades.


Functions in a team role, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary direct patient care teams, and clinical systems expert to Super Users. Develops and implements training pertaining to the staff use of clinical systems, participates as an active and integral member of the clinical informatics team and maintains the established standards of care and practice through direct patient care, clinical systems improvement activities and staff education.


This position will oversee and examine current processes and protocols and compare to best practices standards, identify areas that require improvement and recommend priorities based on HIPAA and governmental guidelines and quantify, plan and implement process improvement projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

1. Provides in-house expertise and technical support to end-users on EHR and software-related issues.
2. Maintains the EHR Clinical system.
3. Designs and maintains the electronic clinical documentation.
4. Maintains menus that affect clinical documentation system.
5. Oversees and assists with security functions as they apply to the clinical information systems.
6. Identifies, researches, and resolves technical problems, working with outside vendors/technical support as needed. Document, track and monitor problems to ensure a timely resolution.
7. Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates clinical systems and user needs to provide recommendations and solutions to organizational needs.
8. Tests or oversees the testing of all software updates and new releases of clinical software modules within the EHR.
9. Organizes and conducts periodic interdepartmental meetings between Clinical and
Administrative/Fiscal departments to provide a forum for raising new issues and resolving old ones relating to the Hospital Information Systems.
10. Assists in developing, reviewing, and implementing IT policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the databases and software applications.
11. Makes recommendations regarding the adoption of software enhancements or changes, including scheduling and integration into the existing hospital environment. Involved in EHR Super User calls.
12. Responsible for the timely processing of all Help Desk requests associated with the clinical software modules on EHR and Super Users.
13. Trains staff on the use of clinical software applications as needed.
14. Develops and produces accurate and timely routine and special reports and data retrievals for staff as needed, and is the point person for the requests of clinical data reports.
15. Oversees day-to-day integrity of clinical informatics systems, conducting frequent reviews of entered data to assure the absence of system related problems.
16. Remains informed on software updates, upgrades and additional services of the clinical computer applications, as well as other in-house applications that interact with the clinical applications.
17. Attends and completes all hospital required in-services and educational requirements including annual employee required training, computer based training, CEUs, etc.
18. Attends committees, meetings, or workshops as volunteered or assigned.
19. Completes special projects as assigned by the CIO.

QUALIFICATIONS / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

Two to three years of professional clinical experience required. Minimum of two years of health care application in an IT setting is preferred. If not Epic Certified, must attain Certification – level determined by CIO – in Clinical Area for Epic within 6 months.


EXPERIENCE:

Strong problem and issue resolution experience. Experience with data analysis, data management associated with systems evaluation, clinical research and analysis tools required. Working knowledge of Clinical Quality Measures, (CQM), and other standards of care. Experience in basic computer skills, comfortable using software applications, and Microsoft Office Suite required.


SKILLS:

Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work with all levels of management, administrative, clinical and vendor staff understanding of all major clinical programs, documentation and clinical processes. Strong leadership skills in implementation of change management. Initiative to carry out the work tasks assigned without constant direction. High motivation, determination, loyalty, poise, confidence, and the ability to give follow orders. Ability to set priorities, to organize and coordinate work efficiently, and to establish good personal relations with other workers and the public is essential. Demonstrate time management skills, work responsibly and cooperatively within both intra-department and inter-program relationships. The ability to pay close attention to detail is necessary in order to ensure accuracy. Ability to articulate technical and user needs in a concise manner easily understood by all.
